This Arts Center would be a dream come true for my mother. For the school and its students, it will memorialize the life and work of an extraordinary woman who began with a belief in her own son Gary and, in the process, changed the lives of thousands of other children — and families — throughout the world.

Renovation of Lab’s Reservoir Campus includes the new four-story high school and calls for a renovation and expansion of the Middle School, including an additional floor on the Arts Wing and an upgrade to the Theater.

Phase II is still in the design phase, but we are expecting that the space devoted to the Arts will double and will be located at the heart of the campus.  This Center will be named for Lab’s founder, Sally L. Smith.  The Sally L. Smith Center for the Arts will have large, open, flexibly designed art studios, adaptable to a full range of media as well as plans to house music and dance studios, increasing the emphasis on movement and music as artistic expressions.  The expanded Theater will also be housed in the Arts Center.

Almost $1.2 million has already been designated to the effort of transforming the Arts Wing into the Sally L. Smith Center for the Arts, with all of the improvements noted above.  Donors interested in making a gift to the Center, may contact Marty Cathcart, Director of Institutional Advancement at marty.cathcart@labschool.org or 202-944-2201.
